“The buck stops here.” – Harry S. Truman
Accountability and responsibility are critical to your short and long term success.
Accountability is a leadership role, it’s acknowledgement and assumption of responsibility for actions, products, decisions, etc. and encompassing an obligation to report explain and be answerable for such resulting consequences. An obligation to demonstrate and take responsibility for performance in light of agreed expectations. Accountability is not shared; it’s an ultimate responsibility for which only one person is accountable for.
Responsibility is the obligation to act accountable and answer for an action. Responsibility can often be shared. Your employer was responsible for hiring and properly training you. They are to make sure you receive necessary information and support as you grow. The company also is responsible to provide products, tools or whatever necessary for the business. Everyone within the company is responsible for conducting professionally and in a businesslike manner.
For a person to succeed, all in all, being responsible and accountable goes hand in hand. You must be responsible in obtaining short term tasks but in the long haul you will be held accountable for finishing the project correctly on deadline.
In part many people may be responsible for giving you the proper tools to work with on your way to success, but in all, you and only you are accountable for reaching that goal. Don’t pass the buck.
